We all know that women will do just about anything to have smooth sexy legs and that is why we are reviewing the Braun Silk-Epil Xpressive 7181 Epilator.  Every woman knows that it is a sin the slip into a cute mini skirt or a little black dress with hairy legs.

Braun claims that the Silk-epil 7 gives you smooth skin, removing even hair as short as 0.5mm. That’s about the size of a grain of sand. Not all epilators can make that claim and quite frankly most epilators have a lot of trouble with hairs that small. Braun can throw all the specs at us and tell us this is their least painful epilator, but the most appealing thing about this epilator is that you can use it cordless and hop in the shower with it.

I remember that when I first heard that epilators could give you smoother skin for longer than shaving, I wanted to try them but was afraid of the pain. No matter what epilator you get, you are going to have to work through the pain at first and then after that it’s easy street. You just have to bite the bullet. Braun has included a special messaging mechanism on this epilator which really does help dampen the amount of pain you experience. They have also included a pack of Olay cooling wet wipes which help cool and prepare the skin. Still, hopping in the shower with this epilator should cut down on the pain by a ton. It’s won’t be painless, but it’s not torture either. It’s a price that most women will be willing to pay for beautiful legs.

It’s pricey, but the Braun Silk-Epil 7181 Epilator is Braun’s top of the line model and simply one of the best epilators on the market. Some people might prefer to epilate on dry land and it’s nice you can do this as well. It’s got a ton of features not found on lower priced epilators like a cool smart light that makes sure you miss no hair. It’s the secret to great legs and easily one of our favorite epilators. Braun has done it again.

Design

The Braun Silk-Epil 7 is durable, functional, easy to use, and it’s pretty to look at. It has a great solid construction that we have come to expect from Braun. It feels sturdy enough to even withstand a fall.

The Silk Epil 7 is a nice upgrade from the previous model from Braun. It’s got a slimmer feminine body that fits into your hand more easily. The newer design also makes it much easier to clean because the entire tweezer head is visible. The body is mostly white but it’s got a cute pink color that outlines certain parts of the epilator. When you hold it in your hand, you can’t really describe it as lightweight, but it feels like it going to do what it is supposed to. If you are used to shaving, it takes some adjusting as the epilator is larger than a normal sized razor. On top of the epilator are 2 roller style massagers, which are supposed to lessen the amount of pain you feel by massaging the skin.

Before you turn it on be prepared for the noise it makes. To turn it on, you press one of the lock keys, and rotate the switch clockwise to your desired speed setting. As soon as it is turned on, the built in Smart Light comes on. It produces an almost daylight condition near wherever it is placed on the skin. With it you can see even the finest hairs. Ever since Braun introduced the Smart Light to its epilator line, it has become one of the best innovations in epilator technology. My bathroom is poorly lit, so if I were epilating I would have to go by feel instead of by sight. With other epilators, it is easy to miss hair on the back of your legs or in the crook of your knee. Not this one. The light ensures that you won’t miss any stragglers. You be able to run them all down until you are smooth.

Unlike the Panasonic Epiglide ES-WD51-P, this epilator has a non slip grip jacket which makes it easier to hold and grip in wet conditions.

Number of tweezers

The Silk Epil 7 has 40 mini tweezers. It’s not the most tweezers that we have seen on an epilator but this epilator employs Braun’s close grip technology. Hair on the body doesn’t grow in an organized fashion. The tweezers are actually staggered which makes them miss less hair. The tweezers are manufactured at the optimal angle so that they can actually grab short hairs very close to the skin. It can be difficult to remove hair lying flat. There is no comb on this Braun epilator, but the soft lift tips on each of the tweezers gently lift flat hair so that the tweezers can get to them.

Speed settings

The epilator is off in the (0) position. To select your speed, you press one of the safety locks and rotate the switch in a counter clock wise direction to you preferred speed. This epilator has two speeds: Soft(1) which is extra gentle, and Fast(2) which is extra efficient. At first, you will want to use the lower setting as it is more tolerable. You can always adjust it your personal preference.

Head

The Braun Silk-epil 7 features a pivoting head that can pivot up to 15 degrees forward and back which allows it to epilate even the most awkward places like the knees. The pivoting feature on this model is due to a somewhat spring-like metal bar that is attached to the back of the epilator head. Other epilators have a lot of trouble around the bony areas of the body, but the Braun 7181 performs well even here. While the pivoting head adapts to the skin contours, it is best to place it flat onto the skin and guide it across the surface of the skin.

Wet & Dry

The Silk-epil 7 is designed to be used on both wet and dry skin. The biggest advantage with the Silk-epil 7 is that you can use it in the shower. Warm water beating on your skin makes the skin less sensitive.Warm water is relaxing and soothing. You can use it in the shower under running water. Make sure your skin is moist so that the epilator can glide freely across it. You can even use shower gel to lubricate the skin. The warmth improves your circulation and increases the comfort of your experience while making your skin less sensitive.

Some may even prefer to use this epilator in the shower because it can be less painful. It’s also more convenient to use it in the shower because hairs go down the drain instead of getting all over the bathroom floor. However, for some people it might not be as effective when used in the shower. Hair tends to stick to skin in the shower. It is easy to miss hair and depending on your hair type it might actual break hair instead of pulling it out at the root. If that is the case, just use it dry. It will probably also make your shower longer since epilating can take some time. Overall, it’s nice to have to option of using it in the shower

Parts Of The Skin It Can Be Used On

The Braun Silk-epil 7181 is designed to be used on your legs and body only. It only includes one cap, which is called the efficiency cap. The efficiency cap allows you to cover a larger area on the skin, so more hairs are removed with each stroke. Don’t try to use this model on your face, underarms, or bikini area because the cap is too big for those areas. It’s too painful. Most people are going to just epilate their legs or arms, so this model may be all you need.

If you want to use to use it on your face, underarms, or bikini line you have to purchase different attachments or buy the upgraded Braun 7681 which already includes them. This model is identical to the 7681, but it only includes the one of the caps. There is a shaver cap, facial cap, underarm cap, and trimmer cap that you can buy separately. You can’t buy the attachments locally, they have to be ordered. It really would have been nice if they were included. This is an excellent epilator if you are looking for a high quality epilator with a basic head for epilating your legs and body only.

Performance and Comfort Level

The original epilators in the 1980s were downright painful. The Braun Silk-epil 7 has come a long way. We haven’t come across an epilator as yet that isn’t painful when you first start epilating. While there is a discomfort factor when initially using the device, you do get accustomed to it. Besides most of us are women and we are used to pain. Remember to always keep skin taut with one hand and use short strokes with the epilator. Move upwards from the bottom of your leg up.

The Braun does have a number of features that do reduce the amount of pain you feel from pulling hairs out at the root. The first thing is that it vibrates. The massaging aspect makes this really more comfortable to use. You know when you accidentally hit something and then you rub the area to make it feel better. The massaging feature works similar to that. There are 2 ridged rollers on both sides which produce a high frequency massage. The first roller prepares the skin before the hair is plucked out and the second roller massages the skin after it is pulled out. This massaging action distracts your nerves just enough so that you don’t feel as much pain. Make sure you use gentle pressure to get the full effect of the massage.

Secondly, you can use this in a warm shower, which can be more comfortable.

Also included in the box are Oil of Olay cool wet wipes and they help numb the pain. Just wipe them on and wait for a minute before you epilate.

These are great when you first start epilating because they tend to sooth and cool the skin. After awhile, you will find that you don’t need them anymore but it’s nice that they are included.

The actual performance is outstanding. The Braun Silk-epil 7 is fast and powerful to remove just about every single hair even if you shave the day before. Even the shortest hair (0.5mm) can be removed. It handles hair so short. Other brands would miss them altogether.

Cord Type

The Silk-epil 7 is a fully cordless epilator that gives you the freedom to epilate wherever you want even in the shower. You don’t have to be near any outlet and it easier to get to places like the back of your knees without having to worry about a cord. To charge it, first make sure the device is off. Then just put one end of the charging cord into the epilator and the other end into and electric outlet. The green charging light will come on and start flashing. When the epilator is charged the light will stay solid. It charges in approximately 1 hour. Due to safety reasons you can’t use this model while it is plugged in or charging. It can only function cordlessly. It holds charge for an impressive amount of time. A full charge offers up to 40 minutes of cordless run time. When the light turns red and flashes, it means the charge is low and you have to recharge it. One improvement we would have liked to see is a charging cradle instead of just a plug.

Cleanup

Cleanup is easy. To clean it, remove the cap and brush it out with the included brush. You can also clean the tweezers with alcohol to disinfect them. Because it is 100% waterproof, it is easy to clean under a tap. The entire head is removable which makes it easy to clean. Remove the cap and place the epilator head under running water. Then let it dry before reattaching it.

Additional Accessories

This set comes with the epilator, the recharging plug, the efficiency epilation cap, a cleaning brush, a package of Oil of Olay wipes, and a pouch. The soft plastic pouch is a lot cheaper than the previous model. The older model had a zipper on it with an actual bottom. This one uses a drawstring and is like a sack. It is very small and it is a tight fit to put in the charging cord, cleaning brush, and efficiency cap.

What Others Are Saying

We really can’t find anything bad to say about this Braun Silk-Epil 7181 and even customers were extremely satisfied with this epilator. It is receiving a stunning 4.6 out of 5 stars. The only negative we found was one person felt that it worked better dry than wet. The customer felt that the epilator was breaking hair instead of plucking it.  This really is a personal preference and some people may find it more comfortable to use it in the shower versus using it on dry skin. People were impressed by the how well it held a charge and how easy it was to clean.

Beginners stated that epilating initially hurts, but it doesn’t take time to get accustomed to it. Most people found that the massaging nubs and Oil of Olay wipes helped reduce the initial pain. Overall, this is a top quality epilator that is receiving exceptional ratings compared to most other epilators. It has a higher price range but the overwhelming majority of customers feel the bells and whistles on this model are enough to justify the price tag.
