- SummaryThe Braun se7681 is extremely effective at removing hair. Compared to other epilators, it removes hair with a minimal amount of passes. While it doesn’t quite live up to Braun’s ‘grain of sand’ claim, it does remove some of the finest and smallest hairs that waxing can’t.
The Braun Silk Epil 7681 is currently the top of the line model in Braun’s line of epilators. It’s marketed as the best Braun epilator. Braun advertises this model for the entire body including the face, armpits, bikini line, and legs. It comes with several attachments for various areas of the body and includes a shaver with trimmer attachment. With all of its included features, this is one fancy epilator. It does everything including shaving.
Unlike previous Braun epilators, this cordless model can be used entirely under water in the shower or bath along with the normal dry epilation. It features two speed settings. Braun claims that this model can remove hair “as small as a grain of sand.” Does it live up to that claim? It’s currently our highest rated epilator. Let’s find out why in our hands on review.
What’s In The Box
Let’s see what comes inside the box. To open the box, you have to remove the tape on the sides of the box. The box actually opens from the back.
Once you get everything out of the box, you’ll have the Braun 7681 epilator, shaver head with trimmer attachment, efficiency cap, sensitive area cap, facial cap, travel bag, charging cable, small brush, and 16 Olay pre epilation wipes.
It is easy to miss but the high frequency massage cap is already on the epilator. Like the other caps, it can be popped off and switched with another cap.
The instructions aren’t the easiest to understand and are pretty brief. It’s pretty jumbled up with diagrams in one area and text in another. The accessories aren’t labeled, so you have to use the instructions to find out what each accessory is. It’s not hard to figure out. We’ll go over all the components in detail later in the review. For now we just want to briefly go over the pieces.
The shaver head converts the epilator into a normal electrical shaver which can be used to shave normally.
High Frequency Massage Cap
Out of the box, this cap is already attached to the epilator. This massage cap supposedly has mini rollers that vibrate which is supposed to reduce pain. This cap has the ability to pivot 15 degrees back and forth along the contours of the body.
The efficiency cap allows the epilator to make maximum contact with the skin resulting in faster epilation. Once you are used to epilating, it is recommended that you switch to this cap for faster results. Like the massage cap, this cap has the ability to pivot 15 degrees back and forth along the contours of the body.
Sensitive Area Cap
This cap is used for sensitive areas like the underarms and bikini line. It’s supposed to allow for better precision and control in those areas. This cap doesn’t pivot.
This cap is designed for the face. Its hole is a little narrower than the sensitive area cap. It is supposed to give you more precision in removing unwanted hair on the face. This cap doesn’t pivot.
Pull String Waterproof Bag
The epilator comes with a small bag to keep everything together. It’s great for when you are traveling or just want to keep things organized.
The cable is used to charge the epilator.
Small Cleaning Brush
The brush is used to clean hair out of the epilator.
16 Olay Pre Epilation Wipes
These Olay wipes are designed to relax the skin before epilating.
The Braun Silk Epil 7 is a well built epilator with a perfect contour that fits perfectly in your hand. The main body of the epilator is white which is nicely highlighted with the silver color used on the dial. It has nice sparkly shimmer on the bottom part. It looks and feels substantial.
The design is both pleasing to look at and functional. The various caps can be clipped on and off by squeezing the insets on the sides of the caps. To put another cap on you just have to make sure the arrows line up on the back and click the cap on.
Additionally, the epilator head and shaver head can be interchanged with ease by pushing the release button on the back.
We love how the massaging cap and efficiency cap pivots 15 degrees back and forth with the contours of your body, making it easier to go over irregular contours like the knees or ankles.
Here is the epilator head. It looks so Texas Chainsawish but it works well. The Braun 7681 has 40 tweezers in its head. This is a nice balance of tweezers. In general, the more tweezers you have, the faster you can epilate and the more painful it is since you are plucking more hair out at a time. Currently, the most number of tweezers on an epilator is 72 on the Emjoi Emagine.
The tweezers are staggered to ensure better tweezer coverage. Braun claims the close-grip technology on the tweezers ensures superior performance and the most thorough hair removal with even the shortest hairs as short as 0.5mm being removed. While it does remove the shortest hairs, it works best when the hair length is 2 – 5 mm.
Before epilating, always clean the tweezer head with rubbing alcohol to minimize the risk of infection.
Before you can start epilating, you have to charge the epilator. After connecting it to the electrical outlet, it takes about 1 hour to fully charge. The green light (plus sign) on the epilator will begin flashing, indicating that it is charging. Once the green light is solid, the epilator is ready to go.
Because this is a wet and dry model, as a safety feature, you are unable to use this epilator when it is charging or while it is plugged in. You must disconnect it from the outlet before use. This is a universal downside to all wet and dry epilators and a safety mechanism used to prevent shock.
On a fully charged battery, you get around 40 minutes of use. Though we would have liked to see a longer battery life, for most people, this should be enough time to do both legs. The instructions state that using it under water reduces the operation time. Under water, you will get under 30 minutes of use.
To turn on the unit you have to press down one of the white lock buttons and rotate the dial clockwise to one of the speed settings. There are two different speeds that you can select. Speed 1 is for gentle epilation and speed 2 is for extra efficient.
Both settings are pretty fast with speed setting 2 reaching 2035 rpm or 81,400 plucking moments per minute. This means speed 2 is at the skin surface more often, meaning it tends to miss less hair. You have to find the setting that works better for your hair type and body area. Always start with the lowest speed. Although the higher speed initially hurts more, the faster speed helps numb out the skin faster.
Let’s talk about one of our favorite features on the Braun Silk Epil Epilator – the remarkable Smart Light. When you switch on the unit, a bright white light located above the controls automatically comes on. It illuminates the area you are epilating, thus revealing the hairs being plucked out and showing any of the ones you have missed. It is very helpful for removing fine hair. It is incredibly satisfying to hunt down every last hair with the Smart Light.
With the Smart Light, you don’t have to sit near a bright window. You can epilate anywhere. It works great on areas that are in darkness. When epilating the underarms in front of a mirror, it still can still be difficult to see the area you are epilating. The Smart Light really helps you see what you are doing.
When you first turn on the Braun 7681, it can be a bit loud. When we tested how loud the Braun 7681 got, it measured around 70 decibels. At 70 decibels, it is no louder than a men’s electric razor. In comparison, a men’s electric shaver read around 80 decibels.
One of the biggest selling points with the Braun 7681 is the ability to use it under water. It’s rather nice to be able to use it with soapy shower gel. It is less painful under water especially during a bath.
Although it does work better dry, we love the fact that it is versatile enough to use it both ways. This is especially great for sensitive areas like the bikini or underarm area. You can do your legs dry and underarms under water. You may want to start out wet and when your skin adjusts to the pain, you can do it dry.
Even if you don’t use it in the shower or bath, because it fully immersible in water, it is actually easy to clean as the caps can be rinsed under water.
There are many advantages and disadvantages to using it under water. It does tend to make your shower or bath longer, so if you like to relax, wet epilation might not be for you . We found using it under water tends to reduce the battery life to under 30 minutes. It’s a bit fiddly to use under water. When your hands are wet and soapy, it is a bit tricky to turn the dial on and off. There is no real grip on the epilator.
While it is less painful in the shower, hair tends to stick to the skin, making it harder to grab all the little hairs. It works better in the bath, when you submerge your body part under water and epilate. That way the hairs aren’t sticking to the skin and are raised up by the water.
It’s also harder to see if you have removed all the hair under water. You have to move your body part out of the water so the Smart Light can pick up the hair you missed. Of course, you can always pick up the hairs you missed when dry out of the shower.
Body Areas It Can Be Used On
Most women are going to use the Braun 7681 on their legs, but it is designed to be use everywhere. Areas such as the face, bikini area, and underarms tend to be more sensitive to pain.
The most useful attachment is the efficiency cap, which is included on every model in the Braun Silk Epil 7 series. It’s got little ridges on the edge that help lift up hair. With this cap you can remove most of the hair in one or two rounds.
To ensure the best results, always stretch your skin when epilating with your free hand. Glide the epilator very slowly without pressure. Going against the hair growth will give you a smoother finish. Moving in circles helps to pick up any stray hair. It helps to do smaller sections at a time until each section is hair free. The efficiency pro cap works well for larger areas like the legs, arms, and lower abdomen.
Unique to this epilator is that it comes with a variety of attachments designed for different areas of the body.
We would have liked to see Braun include a smaller head specifically for the face, underarms, and bikini area. Instead, Braun has included different caps. There is a cap for the face and underarms. In general, while these caps help a little with precision, they just fit over the regular epilator head, exposing a smaller portion of the tweezers. These caps don’t pivot with the contours of the body like with the efficiency and massaging cap, making them bulky. Worse, they really don’t make it easier to navigate around the underarms, bikini area, and face.
The only real difference among them is the size of the opening. The narrower the opening, the less hair is pulled out. At first, you might want to use the underarm cap on your legs so you are pulling out less hair. It’s less painful, but it also means it takes longer.
The Braun 7681 works to remove underarm hair and bikini line hair. It can be difficult to maneuver it below the bikini line due to its bulkiness.
The instructions warn that the underarms and bikini line are particularly sensitive to pain at the beginning. This is certainly true and it is not recommended for those new to epilation.
With the underarm cap, it can be a little hard to get all the hairs through the narrow opening on the cap. When done dry, it can be difficult to glide. You can also nip the skin if you use it at the wrong angle. It does work better in water with shower gel.
When dry, it’s easier to use the massaging cap or efficiency cap on the underarms which provides a wider opening. It’s best to do your armpits in front of a mirror in small bits. When doing the underarms, it is very important to raise your arms above your head and pull your elbow back to stretch the skin, ensuring the epilator won’t pinch the skin. Don’t apply any deodorant for a couple of hours after.
With the facial cap, the Braun 7681 doesn’t work well on the face. The cap is a little thick and only the center of the head is exposed, which makes it difficult for the tweezers to reach hair on say your upper lip. It might have worked if the opening was offset a bit. You can remove the facial cap and use a different cap but you are exposing more of the tweezers to the face. While it can be used on the face, the epilator is a bit bulky to get into all the nooks and crannies.
Shaving Head And Trimmer
The Braun 7681 epilator comes with a very useful shaver head with trimmer attachment which instantly turns the epilator into an electric shaver. To use it, you simply remove the epilator head by pressing the release button on the back. Then you snap the shaver head on, locking it in place.
The shaver can only be used dry. Our favorite feature is the trimmer head which trims hair to the ideal length for epilation.
It’s also nice to have the option to use the razor in places you don’t want to epilate. If you don’t want to go completely bare or are in a rush, the electric shaver is great for grooming and tidying up “down there” or the underarms.
The Braun 7681 tweezes hair efficiently with consistently smooth results. On the highest speed, it is very efficient. With 40 tweezers, on the highest speed you get over 81,000 plucks per minute. Hair is removed quickly and effortlessly. It is even able to pick up super fine hair. For the legs, it tends to remove most of the hair with a minimal amount of passes.
While it does remove some of the smallest hairs, Braun’s claim that it removes hair as small as a grain of sand is a bit exaggerated. Very tiny stumble is not removed. Like all other epilators, it won’t leave you completely smooth. However, it does seem to grab shorter hairs that ordinary waxing seems to miss. While it does work with shorter hairs, it works better with slightly longer stubble. The optimum length is 2 – 5 millimeters. If your hair is long, for the best results, it is best to trim it to the correct length with the included trimmer.
Anytime you are removing hair at the root, it is going to be painful. Braun has included a number of things with this epilator that are supposed to reduce the amount of pain felt. Braun says the Olay wipes are supposed to make the whole process more comfortable. These smell nice but don’t really reduce the pain. They are also pretty expensive to replace.
With the standard massaging cap, Braun claims that high frequency vibrations help reduce discomfort. When in use, the whole epilator sort of vibrates. The rollers on the top and bottom of the high frequency massage cap move up and down, in effect massaging the skin. When placed on the skin, this vibration is supposed to distract from the plucking. However, the massaging cap doesn’t reduce the amount of pain a whole lot when compared to the efficiency cap.
Because the Braun 7681 is very effective at removing hair, it can be painful especially when compared to the Panasonic ES-WD51-P Wet and Dry epilator. It’s probably because it seems to pluck out hair better. Certain areas hurt more than others, especially around bones and areas with coarser hair, similar to waxing. Don’t go straight for the armpits, bikini line, or face, because these areas are much more painful than the legs.
If you are used to waxing, you will be able to handle this. With any epilator, if you have not epilated before, or haven’t epilated for some time, it can be painful when you start epilating. It does take some time before your skin adapts. The amount of pain does decrease over time. If you are used to epilation, you will barely feel tiny tugs.
The Braun 7681 is easy to clean, as you simply have to run all the components under water. You can also clean it dry with the supplied cleaning brush dipped into alcohol. To minimize the risk of infection, it is a good idea to clean it with rubbing alcohol before each use.
What Others Are Saying
Both beauty bloggers and customers are praising the Braun 7681. .
Elizabeth Goh loves “being a hairless monkey.” Lorna Potter whose been epilating for awhile didn’t find it painful on her legs. She loved that she could do both her legs in 8 minutes. Mybeautyjunkie says ,”It’s the best thing ever”and found that staggered tweezers helped grab hair from any direction. Rebecca Davies was most impressed with the pivoting head.
Because the price difference between the Braun 7181 and Braun 7681 is so small, we think it’s a better idea to go with the Braun 7681 since is comes with all the attachments and the nice shaving head with trimmer attachment.
On one hand, the Braun 7681 is loud and expensive. Besides the shaver head, some of the other additional features are a mixed bag. Nothing Braun has included really makes this epilator less painful. The additional caps for the face and underarms are bulky and merely just cover the epilator head. The ability to use it under water is a nice feature that comes with several drawbacks. The biggest is that you can’t use this epilator while it is charging or plugged in.
Still, there is a lot to like about the Braun 7681.
The ergonomic design fits perfectly in your hand and the pivoting head moves nicely with the contours of the body to remove hair in the most difficult places. While it doesn’t quite pull out 0.5mm stubble, it does seem to pull out the tiniest hairs. Further, it does what it is supposed to do with exceptional speed and efficiency. The Smart Light makes pulling out stragglers extremely satisfying. We love the included shaver with trimmer attachment which takes the guess work out of trimming hair to the correct length. With its excellent ability to remove hair quickly and strong feature set, the Braun 7681 comes highly recommended.
