  • SummaryThe big selling point with this epilator is the number of tweezers it contains. There are 72 of them, making it the most ever on an epilator. This greatly speeds up the epilation process. If you can live with the cord, the Emjoi AP-18 Emagine is one of the best epilators and offers superior performance.

We are in a constant search for the best epilator. When we saw all of the positive reviews for the Emjoi AP-18 Emagine Dual Opposed 72 Tweezer Head Epilator, we knew that we had to review it. Emjoi specializes in making epilators and the Emagine is actually one of the best selling epilators on the market. The Emjoi AP-18 is pricier than many of the other epilators on the market, but is widely considered one of the best high end epilators. You can use it on your legs, bikini area, and underarms. Many people say it isn’t as painful to remove hair with this particular epilator. It’s got a host of features that are supposed to make the epilating process more comfortable like  messaging fingers, glide technology, and dual heads.

However, the feature that really caught our eye the most was that this epilator boasts 72 tweezers. 72 tweezers? That is a lot of tweezers. In fact, it’s the most tweezer disk heads available on any epilator currently on the market.

Everyone hates shaving their legs, and loves the long lasting results you get from epilation but if you have ever epilated before, you know that it can take some time. Nobody wants to sit there removing hair forever. With so many tweezers, this epilator is designed to shorten the lengthy epilation process as it is supposed to remove more hair at one time. The real question is: does it make a difference? For the most part, we were pleasantly surprised to see how well it performed.

At the time of writing this we found the Emjoi Ap-18 at over 35% off the retail price at Amazon. Click this link to see the current special offer on it!

Design

The Emjoi Ap-18 looks a lot like a men’s electrical shaver. The epilator is a nice pretty red color. We love the hot red Ferrari color.
Emjoi Ap-18 design
The actual body has a concave shape with makes it easy to hold in your hand. The shape of the head is supposed to reduce the amount of discomfort felt when epilating. The head is rather large and is perfect for removing hair from large regions. It gives great coverage.

Compared to other epilators, it can feel a little bulky and heavy. While it’s great for larger regions, it might be a little difficult to maneuver the large head in smaller regions where precision is required. It might be a little hard to touch up the bikini line without practice.

The gears of the unit are located on the sides of the tweezer heads. The only problem is that the gears are made out of plastic which might not be as sturdy as metal gears. The cord plugs into the back of the unit on the bottom. The power button is located in the middle of the unit. To turn it on you have to push it down to unlock the safety and then slide it to the speed you prefer.

Number of tweezers

number of tweezersThe biggest selling point about the Emjoi Emagine is the number of tweezers. With 72 tweezers, it has the most aggressive design we have ever seen on an epilator. Most people buy this epilator on that fact alone. When you have 72 tweezers, you are going to get a more efficient way to remove hair than just 20 or 40 tweezers. You will remove more hair at once. This significantly reduces the time it takes to epilate your hair because you are going to have to make less passes. You could spend over an hour epilating both of your legs with epilators with less coverage since you have to keep going over the same area. With this epilator, you can have both your legs done in less than half the time.

Speed settings

There are two different settings on this epilator. There is a safety switch lock that you have to press before you can adjust the speed. You slide the switch up. The low setting is recommended for fine hair and the high speed is recommended for coarser hair types. You have to use the appropriate setting for your hair. If hair breaks on the higher speed setting, then switch to the lower speed.

Head

There are dual heads, each which rotate in the opposite direction. There are 36 tweezers on each head. When they move in different directions, they pull the skin tight, helping to relax the skin. This makes it easier for the epilator to pull out the hair. The dual heads are offset a little bit which allows them to cover a larger area. In the center of the head there are lifting fingers which help to lift short and flat hair, protecting against ingrown hair. With glide technology, you don’t have to press the epilator down hard on the skin. There is actually a nice safety feature that prevents you from pressing the epilator down hard on your skin.

The surface is coated with antimicrobial protection to prevent bacteria from growing on it. This is the only epilator with this technology.

Dry Epilation Only

This epilator is dry only. Don’t  immerse it in water to even clean it.

Parts Of The Skin It Can Be Used On

Emjoi says the Emagine epilator is designed to be used on your legs, bikini line, underarms and even the chin and upper lip. To use it on your face, you have to position the epilator so that only one of the heads makes contact with your face. Don’t put both of the heads on your face like a razor.

You are not going to be able to shape your eyebrows or do any precision work with this epilator. We think that it is better to use a smaller epilator on your face because it offers you more control. While it’s possible to remove hair on the face, it’s really designed to remove a lot of hair from a large area of the body. Because it has a larger head, it tends to work well on the lower half of your body and areas with a lot of hair. It works great on the legs but like all epilators it does require several passes to get all the hair. We found out that the epilator is a little bit more difficult to use on the bony parts of your body like the knees because of the size of the head.

You can even use this epilator on more sensitive areas of your body although you will have to get used to the level of pain. It’s great for removing hair in the armpit area. A lot of people like to use this epilator to just remove hair from their underarms. Shaving tends to make the armpit area look dark. If you remove the hair with an epilator, the area looks a lot smoother. Make sure your armpits are completely dry otherwise it will be difficult to pull out the hair. The head is quiet large so it is a little more difficult to maneuver it around the armpit area. It’s not impossible, but it takes some getting used to.

If you decide to tackle the bikini area with this epilator, be prepared for a lot of pain at first. Hair in the bikini area tends to grow in different directions and is coarser. Shaping the bikini line is a bit difficult with this epilator because of the large head. We prefer trimming this area with something like the Panasonic ES246AC Bikini Shaper and Trimmer. You will be able to precisely trim the bikini area to various different lengths.

Performance and Comfort Level

Overall, this epilator will work well for most people. Emjoi epilators tend to be less painful than the competition. It one of the reasons the price is a bit higher. Even with so many tweezers, a lot of people say that it is not as painful as other epilators because the heads spin very quickly massaging the skin. If you are new to epilation, it might seem really intimidating at first. We have all been there. Like most epilators, this epilator is fairly loud. If you are used to epilating, this epilator is not anymore painful.

If you are new to epilation, any epilator including this one is going to be painful the first couple of time. It’s hard to say how much it will hurt because that is dependent on your pain tolerance and what type of hair you have. Still, this is probably one of the least painful epilators. It gets easier over time. You have to do it regularly, especially at first, since hair grows in cycles and you won’t have to remove as much hair when you maintain epilating.

It’s a lot faster than other epilators, but there is a little bit of technique involved. You absolutely have to take a shower or hot bath to open up your pores. Pull your skin tight in the area you are using the epilator. This will allow the epilator to make better contact with the hair. You have to use shorter strokes. Some people like to move in circles. You do need to go over the same spot a few times, but it usually does a great job on the first pass. If you find it breaking hair instead of pulling it out at the root, make sure to use the slower speed. It might be a little bit more painful but you will get better results. Use tiny circles in the direction the hair growth. Do not rush. Use slow concentrated movements over the skin. While it works great on coarser darker hair and normal hair, sometimes it doesn’t always pick up baby fine hair. It is also very tricky to remove hair from bony areas with this epilator because of the large head.

Cord Type

This epilator requires the use of a plug. It would have been nice if it were cordless and had a rechargeable battery. However, with 72 tweezers it is a very powerful epilator. If it ran on battery, it would not be able to keep a consistent power level. There are many benefits to having a cord. You don’t have to wait for this epilator to charge and it doesn’t lose power. The electrical cord plugs into the bottom of the epilator and is over 8 feet long. Most of the time, it won’t get in the way.

Cleanup

Cleanup is very easy with this epilator. It comes with a little brush that is used to clean the epilator head. The head can be detached for easier cleaning. All you have to do is brush the head to remove the hair out of the epilator. There is no receptacle to catch any of the removed hair. You will also have to clean that hair up or use a towel underneath your body.

Additional Accessories

The Emjoi Ap-18 comes with a cute drawstring travel pouch and a small cleaning brush.
