- SummaryWhile far from completely painless, the Panasonic ES-WD51-P epilator is one of the least painful and quietest epilators. It’s a wet and dry model which makes it even gentler in the bath or shower. This 3 in 1 epilator can trim, shave, and epilate. Equipped with a pivoting dual head and 48 tweezers, it seems to work well though several passes are required for smooth results.
Anytime you remove hair from the root, it can be painful. That’s why we were pretty skeptical when we had to review the Panasonic ES-WD51-P. This wet and dry epilator is currently one of the best selling epilators. It was awarded the Good House Keeping seal of approval. It features three attachment heads, making it a 3 in 1. It’s an epilator, a bikini trimmer, and a shaver. With a host of attachments and features, Panasonic says complete hair removal package.
This cordless epilator charges in an hour and offers 40 minutes of use. It features a pivoting head which makes navigating trickier areas a little bit easier. You can use it on dry skin, but it’s a wet or dry model so it can be used in the shower with foam and lather.
All epilators are painful when you first start epilating but Panasonic claims that this epilator gently removes unwanted hair, making it perfect for those new to epilation. Does this epilator live up to this claim? Find out in our review.

The Panasonic ES-WD51-P Epiglide Ladies Wet Dry Epilator is shaped like and egg and is made of soft plastic. It’s got a nice pearly pink color that is very pretty and feminine. The smaller size makes it ideal for traveling.
While the shape is very comfortable in your hand, the plastic can be a little slippery if you are using it in the shower with soap. It would have been nice if there was a rubber grip on it, sort of like a toothbrush so that you could grip it better.
The controls are extremely user friendly and intuitive. The on/off button is placed conveniently in the center of the main body on the epilator. It’s actually a push button. You simple push it to turn it on and off. This makes sense as it would have been difficult to instead slide the power switch from side to side especially in the shower with soapy hands. The head actually swivels which allows it to hug the contours of the skin when epilating or shaving, resulting in a silkier and closer finish.
Number of tweezers
The Panasonic ES-WD51-P contains 48 rotating Tweezer discs that are designed to capture both longer and shorter hair. As with all epilators, it won’t capture very small hairs. The previous Panasonic ES2045 had only 36 tweezers. The more tweezers an epilator has, the more hair it can remove at one time, allowing you to finish faster. However, it can be more painful to remove more hair at one time. To address this, Panasonic has designed a special cap for beginners that exposes less tweezers. This allows you to remove less hair at one time and is perfect for people newer to epilation.
This Epligide epilator from Panasonic has only one speed setting. Some epilators allow you to adjust the speed setting from a lower to faster speed. It would have been nice for another speed setting. Since, this epilator has only one speed setting you will have to adjust to the intensity.
The ES-WD51-P has a dual disc side-to-side to side gliding head. This allows the two heads to pivot. Because of the unique design, Panasonic says it allows for more efficient epilation.
This model contains several different caps and attachments that allow you to choose how you want to remove your hair. You can either trim it, shave it, or epilate hair.
There are two different caps for epilation: one for beginners and one more for normal users. To release the different caps, there is a head release button on the side of the epilator. All of the caps can be used in water and with foam or soap. When you are done with it, there is a protection cap that snaps tightly on tweezer head to keep it protected.
Shaver cap with optional bikini comb attachment
The ES-WD51-P contains a foil shaver for shaving your body. It actually high quality and works incredibly well. This is usually a feature found on higher priced models. You can use the shaver head on the parts of your body where you want to remove hair but that are too delicate for epilation. It’s even great for quick shaves. In fact, a lot of people are satisfied with just the shaver on this model. There are shavers that give you closer shave, but it is a nice added feature.
It also comes with a nifty bikini comb guard that you can snap on to the shaver cap which allows you to trim hair. Trimming hair is not painful at all because you are not removing hair from the root. This is excellent for trimming hair not just in the bikini area but everywhere. Hair removal is easier and less painful when the hair is short. In fact, if your hair is long, you are going to want to trim your hair with this attachment before actually epilating. It is less painful. Don’t shave it or it will be too short for the tweezers to reach. Use the trimmer.
If you are new to epilation or haven’t done it in awhile, we recommend the beginner cap. Using the beginners cap dramatically reduces the amount of pain, making it perfect for beginners. You can also use it on more sensitive areas of your body. It reduces the epilating area or the amount of tweezers that make contact with your hair, which removes less hair at a time. It’s slower, but it will let you get used to your level of pain tolerance.
Panasonic calls the regular cap the gentle cap. We call it the normal cap. This is the cap you want to use if you are already experienced at epilation. Surprisingly, even the normal cap seems to help with the pain. It does so without slowing you down. This cap will remove hair from larger regions of your body and is perfect for using on the legs and arms.
When you first turn on the Panasonic ES-WD51-P, it can be a bit loud. However, it’s one of the quietest epilators we tested. When we tested how loud the Panasonic ES-WD51-P got, it measured around 67 decibels. At 67 decibels, it is no louder than a men’s electric razor. In comparison, a men’s electric shaver read around 80 decibels.
It is even less noisy in the bath or shower.
Wet & Dry
Lather and Foam Epilation
One of the nice features on this epilator is that it is full immersible in water. According to the manufacturer this is supposed to be gentler than using the epilator in a dry environment. We can confirm this is true.
You can even use it with lather and foam. You simply wet your skin and the epilator head. Place a small amount of soap on the head. When you turn on the epilator, foam is created and allows you to move more quickly over your skin.
The only problem is that when you wet your hair it tends to stick to your skin, making it more difficult for the epilator to get to it. Another problem with using foam is that it makes it difficult to see the hair you are removing.
Still, using this epilator in water is less painful than dry epilation. It is very convenient to hop in the shower or bath with it and epilate at the same time. You don’t have to worry too much about cleanup. It’s nice to have the option for both wet and dry. You can make one pass in the shower and another dry pass.
Parts Of The Skin It Can Be Used On
This epilator, like many epilators, is designed primarily to be used on the legs and arms. It is not designed to be used on your face, but you can actually use it on your body to remove any hair below your eyebrows. The instructions do warn against using it on your face. It might have a little trouble capturing smaller or finer hairs especially on your face, but it depends on how thick your hair is.
If you are more daring, you can remove hair in other places, even in your more sensitive areas, depending on your level of pain tolerance. Some people actually use this epilator to remove hair on their underarms and in their bikini area. If you haven’t developed a high pain tolerance, it can be very painful to epilate these areas because hair tends to be coarser and grow in different directions in these areas. If you aren’t ready to epilate these areas of your body, we recommend shaving or trimming your underarm area. Some people don’t like the dark shadow that shaving leaves under their armpits, so they epilate that area for a smoother look.
Instead, of epilating your bikini area, you can trim your bikini area with the bikini comb attachment. If you want a little more control you can use a good bikini trimmer to precisely shape and even get extremely close to the skin in that area, depending on the look you are trying to achieve.
Performance and Comfort Level
For some people it might take awhile to remove all the hair from their legs at first. However, the results usually last at least 2 weeks. The Panasonic ES-WD51-P is effective at removing hair, but obtaining a smooth feel takes a few passes. Since there is only one speed and it is fairly slow, you might have go over the same area several times to get all the hair. With practice, you will be able to finish both of your legs with just one charge.
Is it going to hurt? As far as epilators go, we found it to be one of the least painful epilators. About 90% of people who have used other epilators, say that this epilator is not as painful. It’s not completely painless. No matter what, if you have never used an epilator before, it is going to hurt. It does get easier after your first time since you won’t have to remove as much hair and your nerve cells will get used to epilating. With each round of epilation your hair might even grow thinner and you will have to epilate less hair.
There are several things you can do to lessen the amount of pain. The great thing with this model is that it includes everything you need to epilate in the correct way. Some people find that epilating in the shower is gentler. Epilate in warm shower or after the shower to soften your skin. Never epilate long hair as it can get trapped in the epilator and get pulled unnecessarily, causing more pain. Hair shouldn’t be longer than ¼ inch. This model includes a trimmer to trim hair to the correct length. Always trim hair to the correct length.
Place the epilator perpendicular to your skin but do not put too much pressure on the skin. The pivoting heads allow you to get close to the top of the skin. Epilate in the opposite direction of hair growth. When epilating your legs, work your way up your legs. When doing your arms, epilate from the outside of your arms inward. If you don’t want to epilate so much hair at the same time, there is a beginner cap which will remove less hair at once. Most first time users will have to epilate in smaller sections and then take a break. It is okay. You will get there.
This is a cordless model which allows you to take your epilator anywhere from your shower to your bathroom. The portability is great and very convenient. The only downside is that you can only use it cordless. You cannot use it while it is plugged in or while it is charging. This is to prevent you from plugging it in while you are in the shower, but can be annoying.
It takes about 1 hour to fully charge the Epiglide epilator. You will be able to operate it for around 40 minutes. To charge the epilator, you simply plug it into any household outlet. The charging scheme is a little counter intuitive. While charging a solid red light appears. When it is done the light blinks. The charger can be left plugged in without reducing the battery life. Like all wet and dry models, you are unable to use this epilator plugged in or while charging as a safety precaution.
If you have never used an epilator before, you might be surprised to find out that none of the hair that is pulled out is actually collected anywhere. Instead, it falls on the ground or any surrounding surface. This is not a problem in the shower, but if you decide to epilate outside the shower, you will have to pick up the hair and throw it in a trash can.
After you are done with the Panasonic ES-WD51-P, you should always clean the frame, caps, and discs with a little rubbing alcohol to ensure that no bacteria will grow on it. Remove the epiliation caps and clean the epilation head or shaver head with the included cleaning brush.
You can also clean it in the shower by removing the cap and putting a little soap on the epilation or shaver head. Then press the on button to generate a little foam. Then wash the head with water to get rid of all the hair. Turn off the machine and dry it with a towel.
Panasonic has included a convenient travel pouch for taking this epilator on the road with you.
- 5.0” x 2.3” x 1.5”
- Approx. 0.37 lbs
